Psychology & Social Justice
How Our Field Contributes to Inequity and What We Can Do About It
A self-paced 3 CE course for Therapists, Psychologists, Counselors & Social Workers
Facilitator: Dr. Bibi Pirayesh
Dr. Bibi Pirayesh is an educational therapist and social justice advocate with over a decade of experience at the intersection of mental health, education, and systemic change. She holds a Master’s from Columbia University in psychology and a doctorate from Loyola Marymount in social justice and neuroscience. She supports professionals in reimagining their work through a justice-centered lens.
This course invites psychologists, therapists, and other mental health professionals to critically examine the historical and epistemological roots of the field of psychology and the professions it informs.
Focusing on the intersection of mental health and social justice, the course helps participants unpack the foundational structures of Western psychology and medical models which have been formed by patriarchal, Eurocentric, and androcentric frameworks. By engaging with critical perspectives on decolonization and social justice, participants will explore how medical models and diagnostic practices continue to reinforce inequities, particularly for communities of color and other marginalized groups.
Through guided discussions and real-world examples, participants will gain the necessary tools to begin to decolonize their approach to mental health care, and learn practical strategies to shift from traditional paradigms toward more inclusive, socially just practices.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, attendees will be able to:
Describe the historical and epistemological roots of the field of psychology and how these beginnings continue to impact the social justice aspect of many fields today
Recognize traditional medical models and diagnostic frameworks that continue to cause harm and reinforce inequities
Explain the necessary paradigm shift for creating more socially just outcomes
Identify concrete steps to take as professionals today to shift the field and our practices
